Rising LA-based Chinese-American singer-songwriter Demie Cao has collaborated with international DJ and Producer, Holly, known globally as one of the best emerging music artists from Eurowork with Baauer, music and performances, for her single second single of 2020, “SAGE.” Demie has written music for other Chinese and Korean artists with MRMG (Mister Rocks Music Group) and released a Korean track “CHUNGDAM MODELS” in 2017 featuring Ace Hashimoto and Rekstizzy.
Billboard Radio China talked to Demie to find out more about her as well as her song SAGE.
Who are some of your biggest influences when you are working on your music?
Demie: Mostly whoever I’m listening to at the current moment. It really just depends on my mood. I would say though that I definitely cite Missy Elliott to be someone I look up to in music.
What attracted you to be a singer?
Demie: Just the freedom of expression. I started off dancing, and I loved it but the art form is still very dependent on music. It’s nice to be able to also create the music in dancing too!
Musically, what is inspiring you?
Demie: Definitely my personal experiences. I treat music somewhat like a diary. It’s therapeutic to take a feeling and materialize it into a song.
Is there one song you’ve recorded that you are really excited for people to hear?
Demie: There’s a song called “wake up” that I’m really excited for. It’s also a collab with Holly and it’s got a niceee groove.
What can you tell us more details about your first EP Airplane Mode?
Demie: It’s a collection of some of the first songs I’ve ever written. It is an album about traveling, both physically by plane and metaphorically as a person. A lot of the songs on there have been done so long ago, it’s interesting to see how I’ve grown since then. It’s definitely a growth album.
How is working on this song SAGE different than working on other released songs?
Demie: SAGE is one of those tracks that isn’t necessarily as personal as some of my other songs, but one I wrote for fun. It’s a really really hard beat and so I took out my destroyer persona to write to it. Normally, my destroyer persona only comes out when I perform, so this was the first time I experimented writing with her.
Could you tell us a little bit about what is your songwriting process，especially for collaborating with DJ Holly?
Demie: It was a very natural and organic collab. Holly is a super chill guy and we are good friends so it was really easy. He knows what I like, I don’t even have to say anything for him to know that he played something I liked haha
Who would you like to collaborate with in the future on some of your music?
Demie: A dream collab for me would be with someone like Syd or Jhene Aiko. I would love that.
From your experience, we know you are a native speaker of Chinese and English, you even taught yourself Korean(self-taught Korean), so which language do you prefer to release music in? Mandarin, English or Korean?
Demie: English is still my most comfortable language, so I prefer writing with it. However, being Chinese, it’s really important to me to be able to pay homage to my culture so I always try to release a Chinese version of all my songs. My parents are immigrants from 河南, 开封and for them to be able to hear my songs and understand them is important to me.
What would like to say to our Billboard Radio China audiences?
Demie: Hi, Billboard Radio China! Thanks for your support! It is my great pleasure to make music for Chinese people, although I am from America. Hope you could continue to love my music, thank you so much!
